Second Chance Life

I wrote “Second Chance Life” for my husband to perform, so I wrote it from his perspective. Although, when I think about it, I guess that makes it a love song to myself!

Matt had once told me about a particularly difficult time in his life. He remembered walking outside one day, noticing the sunshine, and suddenly realizing that things were going to be okay. Nothing had necessarily changed in that moment, but something in the way he saw his life had shifted.

That story stayed with me. I loved the idea that after going through something painful, there could be a moment when the sunshine finally breaks through and you begin to believe that better days are ahead.

We met a couple of years later, and as it happens, I have green eyes. So when I wrote the line, “Outta nowhere sunshine found me, she was smiling those green eyes,” I was bringing two big moments in his life together.

“Second Chance Life” is about realizing that even when the life you thought you had falls apart, it doesn't mean your best years are behind you. Sometimes the things we never saw coming turn out to be the very things that give us a second chance.
