My husband and I were on our way to a recording studio four hours away. We are both songwriters but had never written a song together. We used the next hour to write “Pretty In the Dark.” He had always had the idea of writing how a girl was pretty in the dark but couldn’t think how to make the lyrics not sound offensive. He was also adamant that “hook line and sinker” be added (I don’t know why). So thus began our quest to find out how one could be pretty in the dark and it sound like a compliment. We learned that co-writing requires compromise, a little patience, and accepting that not every brilliant idea is quite as brilliant as you thought.
