I knew nothing about songwriting. I asked my singer-songwriter husband, how do you write a song? What is a bridge, does every song have to have a bridge? How long should a verse be? He told me there are no rules. This unleashed a river of emotions and words within me. I was suddenly free to put words on paper without having to follow a technical process. “When I Gave Up” was the first song I ever wrote and I had been carrying for years. My ex-husband had been involved in a life-altering accident. This song recounted the first words I heard on the day of the accident as well as the process I went through to hold onto my faith when all seemed lost.
